That doesn't seem like a question you'd ask now, with the rise in popularity of mocktails. But in the spring of 2024, when we showed up at our first farmers markets, we got asked that question—a lot. And honestly, it was a fair question.
Cool Cucumber Co. had officially started just a few months earlier, in January 2024. At the time, mocktails were starting to show up on more menus, but the idea of building an entire company around them still raised a few eyebrows.
For us, though, the idea wasn't all that complicated. We'd spent years making drinks for people, and we knew what went into making a great one. We also knew how we wanted to make ours.
We're a little stubborn about that. Okay, maybe more than a little.
Fresh ingredients aren't a selling point for us; they're the starting point. Real fruit, fresh herbs and quality ingredients are simply the standard. We don't use preservatives, and we're not particularly interested in taking shortcuts just because they'd make things easier. If we think there's a better way to make something, we're probably going to insist on doing it that way—even when the easier way would make a whole lot more sense.
We believed there was room for a company that put that kind of care into mocktails—not as an alternative or an afterthought, but simply as really good drinks. So that's what we decided to make.
Apparently, we weren't the only ones who wanted them.
Stubborn... us? No, never!
We just happen to make things from scratch when buying them would be easier. We use fresh ingredients when something shelf-stable would last longer. We keep tinkering with drinks that are already pretty damn good because we think they could be better. And if we believe there's a right way to make something, good luck convincing us otherwise.
Is this always the easiest way to run a beverage company? Absolutely not.
But we're pretty sure it's why the drinks taste the way they do.
Somewhere along the way, drinks got a little too serious. Don't get us wrong—we'll happily obsess over what's in the glass. But once we hand it to you? You're supposed to enjoy it.
That's a big part of who we are. We like loud music, bad jokes, bright colors, ridiculous ideas and finding reasons to have a good time. We built a giant green van, after all. Subtlety was probably never going to be our thing.
We want Cool Cucumber to feel like the kind of place where everyone is invited to the party. Come try something new. Hang out for a while. Laugh at us—or with us, preferably. Just don't overthink it.
This is supposed to be fun!
Turns out they'll let just about anybody on television.
